[ARCHIVED] New Crosswalks Enhance Walkability in Fountain Hills

New crosswalk at Parkview and Saguaro

Over the past year, more than 20 new crosswalks have been striped and installed across Fountain Hills, bringing more convenient connections for walkers and cyclists. These improvements reflect the Town’s continued commitment to enhancing walkability around the community.

“Our community is an active one, and these crosswalks are an important step in making sure people can easily and efficiently move around Town,” said Public Works Director Justin Weldy. “We’re proud to see these projects making a positive impact in our neighborhoods.”

As you’re out and about, please stay alert at these new crossings. Whether you’re behind the wheel, on foot, or on a bike, a little extra vigilance goes a long way in keeping our community safe.

Crosswalk Safety in Fountain Hills

Know Your Rights & Responsibilities – ARS 28-792

For Pedestrians

  • You have the right-of-way when crossing in a crosswalk if there are no traffic signals.
  • Drivers must slow down or stop to let you cross when:
    • You are on their half of the road, OR
    • You are close enough from the opposite half to be in danger.
  • Stay alert: Do not suddenly step off the curb or run into traffic.
  • Always make eye contact with drivers before stepping out.

For Drivers

  • You must yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk when they are in your lane or approaching dangerously close.
  • If another vehicle is stopped at a crosswalk, do not pass it. A pedestrian may be crossing that you can’t see.
  • Approach crosswalks with caution, especially in busy areas, near schools, and at night

Safety Tips for Everyone

  • Pedestrians: Cross only at marked crosswalks or intersections whenever possible.
  • Drivers: Reduce speed in pedestrian-heavy areas and be ready to stop.
  • Both: Stay off phones and distractions—safety depends on attention.

Remember:

Crosswalk safety is a shared responsibility. Following ARS 28-792 helps prevent accidents and saves lives.
