Rules for Hunting in the Fountain Hills McDowell Mountain Preserve 

Introduction

Wildlife found throughout the State of Arizona, including within the Fountain Hills McDowell Mountain Preserve, is managed by the State and may be hunted in accordance with rules and regulations established by the Arizona Game and Fish Commission.

Fountain Hills Preserve does not allow any hunting within town limits however hunting is permitted in the McDowell Mountain Regional Park.  Therefore, the Fountain Hills Preserve does serve as an access point into the Regional Park, and it is not uncommon to have hunters use the trails for ingress/egress. Provided users are not hunting or discharging weapons within the Town’s portion, there is no prohibition on hunter access to McDowell Mountain Regional Park. 

Arizona Game and Fish Commission (AZGFD) Rules

The following are basic descriptions of rules established by the AZGFD regarding hunting in Game Management Unit 25M, which includes the McDowell Mountain Regional Parks and McDowell Sonoran Preserve. For detailed rules and regulations, please go to www.azgfd.gov.

AZ Game and Fish oversee hunting in the state. Per their policies, the Preserve is exempt, as noted- 

Arizona Game and Fish Commission Rules for Hunting R12-4-321 Restrictions for Taking Wildlife in City, County, or Town Parks and Preserves it notes as follows:

  1. All city, county, and town parks and preserves are closed to hunting and trapping, unless open by Commission Order. 
  2. There is no order by the commission specifically opening the McDowell Mountain/ Fountain Hill’s Preserve and by default it would be closed to hunting. 
  3. Hunting of any kind is NOT permitted in the Fountain Hills McDowell Mountain Preserve. All hunters must follow AZGFD rules and regulations. 

Town of Fountain Hills Rules

In addition to the AZGFD rules, hunters in the Fountain Hills McDowell Mountain Preserve must follow the rules of use, as established in the Town Code Article 9-5 Fountain Hills McDowell Mountain Preserve, but not limited to:

  • No motorized vehicles are permitted beyond designated areas.
  • Access through the Fountain Hills Preserve to the McDowell Mountain Regional Park is limited to the Preserve’s posted hours.
